Intelligence and History Despite their name, Labradors do not come from Labrador. They originated in Newfoundland as the “St. John’s Water Dog,” where they worked alongside fishermen, retrieving nets and escaped fish from the icy North Atlantic. Their seventh-place ranking for intelligence is characterized by their exceptional trainability and an unwavering desire to please. This combination has made them the most common breed selected for guide dog work worldwide. Studies suggest the average Lab can learn a vocabulary of up to 250 words.

Living With a Labrador Retriever Labs are famously outgoing and patient, making them an excellent choice for families with children. They possess boundless energy and require at least an hour of vigorous exercise each day to remain well-behaved. They are natural swimmers, equipped with a thick, rudder-like “otter tail,” webbed feet, and a dense, water-resistant double coat. This coat, however, sheds profusely. Labs are also notorious food lovers and are prone to obesity if their diet is not carefully managed. Common health problems include hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections, and certain heart conditions.

The breed’s capacity for intelligent and heroic action was exemplified by Endal, a British service dog. When his disabled owner fell unconscious, Endal pulled him into the recovery position, covered him with a blanket, retrieved his mobile phone from under the car, and ran to a nearby hotel to get help. For his actions, Endal was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal, an animal bravery award, showcasing the incredible problem-solving ability and devotion of the breed.
