Intelligence and History Developed to be a hardy and diminutive herding dog capable of thriving in the harsh conditions of its native islands, the Sheltie’s intelligence is marked by more than just trainability. Ranking sixth on Coren’s list, they are also highly perceptive and remarkably in tune with their owner’s emotions, able to quickly pick up on subtle cues. This combination of brains and empathy makes them world-class competitors in obedience, agility, and herding trials.
Living With a Shetland Sheepdog Shelties are gentle, playful, and deeply devoted to their families, often following their favorite people from room to room. They are known to be quite vocal, barking to alert their family to strangers or simply out of excitement, which makes them excellent watchdogs. Their beautiful and profuse double coat sheds considerably and requires weekly brushing to prevent mats and manage loose hair. While they are active dogs that need a job to do, their smaller size makes them more adaptable to various living situations, including apartments, provided they receive adequate daily exercise and mental stimulation. Potential health concerns include various eye diseases, hip dysplasia, and thyroid disease.
Their biddable nature and attunement to human needs have made Shelties highly successful in roles that require a gentle touch, such as serving as medical alert dogs, therapy animals in hospitals and nursing homes, and assistance dogs for people with disabilities.
